How To Overcome Procrastination NOW |
You are here: Home > Time Management Tips > Fulfillment Pyramid Fulfillment PyramidThe 'Fulfillment Pyramid' has endured for many years, I believe because it's a powerfully effective 'big picture' device for getting clear about who you are, what you stand for, where you're going, and how to get there. It's the ultimate life planning tool. But it's useless unless you actually DO it. I sometimes ask my seminar attendees if anyone has ever seen this device before. I usually get a few hands. And then I ask if any of them actually followed through and completed it. Only about one out of every 50 or so attendees say they've actually done it. What the *#%@? HELLLL-OOOOOOO!!! Anybody HOME??? McFLY!!! Does ANYONE care about being happy, successful, or fulfilled? I'm only being slightly facetious here. If you knew that there was a way for you to be happier, more successful, and more fulfilled, and it didn't cost you a penny — only about 20 hours or so of your time — would you do it? If not, WHY NOT? Honestly. I want to know. I can only speculate that it must be some sort of neurosis. Maybe it's a feeling of unworthiness or guilt or fear of success. It this is the case, I would strongly recommend getting some sort of cognitive therapy to overcome these road blocks to living your ultimate, fulfilled life. You deserve happiness, success, and fulfillment as much as the next person. WE ALL deserve it. But we have to give our self permission to deserve. It just blows my mind that most people (seems to me) prefer to endure an existence rather than design a truly fulfilling life. Yes, you can design and manifest a happy, successful, and fulfilling life — if you're willing to commit to doing what ever it takes (assuming it doesn't violate your values and it's legal and respectful of other people's rights). Unfortunately, most people aren't — willing. It's not that they can't, it's just that they won't. Huge difference. I hope you're an exception, but I'm not going to lose any sleep over it if you not. Nothing personal. I gave up trying to help people who don't want to be helped years ago. It's an un-winnable battle. I'd rather poke myself in the eye with an ice pick than try to help someone who's hell-bent remaining miserable. Okay, enough of the ranting. First of all, what is the 'Fulfillment Pyramid'? Here's the illustration of it: Fulfillment Pyramid
Look at it. Analyze it. Study it. Just like a woman can try to tell a man what it's like to have a baby, men will never know. Men would have to experience having a baby to fully grasp the gravity of the experience. Unlike men in this example, you can give birth the your Fulfillment Pyramid. But until you experience completing your fulfillment pyramid, you'll never fully grasp the gravity of the experience. All I can say is try it for 9 months and see what happens to your life. If you don't like it, you can always go back to the way things were. Fair enough? If you're at least willing to try, I respect and commend you on your bravery. It takes guts to go through this process, to be willing to look at the truth about your life and make some positive adjustments if and when necessary. Let me make something very, very, very clear here. This is NOT about me telling you how to live your life. It's NOT about me trying to cram my values or life purpose down your throat. That's the beauty of the Fulfillment Pyramid: it's YOUR Fulfillment Pyramid! YOU define your life purpose. YOU define your values. YOU define your passions, goals, projects, and actions. It's all about you getting very clear about you. "Wow," I can hear someone thinking, "this sounds more like a personal growth seminar than a time management course!" Nope. Again, until you've experienced completing your Fulfillment Pyramid, you won't fully understand or appreciate the profound difference it will make in the way you manage your time. Your ability to make decisions will be unbelievably easier. Stressing about prioritizing will be a thing of the past. You will be the captain of your ship, the master of your life. But don't take my word for it. Do it for 9 months and see for yourself. Where and How Do I Begin? The next step from here is to schedule the time you'll need to complete your Fulfillment Pyramid. If you only have one hour per week, put it in your calendar and honor your commitment to yourself to get this done. It may take you 8 weeks or 30 weeks. It doesn't matter how long it takes. Thirty weeks will happen whether you commit to doing this or not. The question is, "Where do you want to be in 30 weeks?" "A year from now — Karen Lamb If you're an animal like me, you can do it over a weekend. I spent just under 20 hours non-stop on a Saturday and Sunday in 1992 to get mine done. When I first heard about this I intuitively knew that it was important, so I jumped on it as soon as I could. I couldn't wait to get it done! I'm very happy I did it. I'm confident that you will find the time spent completing your Fulfillment Pyramid to be some of the most productive and rewarding time you'll ever spend in your life. Again, judge by results, not hallucinations. I'll guide you through every step. You can go in any order. I used to teach from the bottom up. But some people are so mired down in clutter and overwhelm that they couldn't get mentally clear enough to do it justice. So, maybe you need to de-junk and declutter first. Or get organized. Or learn how to effectively delegate to free up some time so you can do this. If goal setting excites you, go for it! Defining your passions shouldn't take long and it has the side benefit of reminding you of things you might want to get back to doing more of or plan for in the future. The most important part of the Fulfillment Pyramid is the foundation. You won't be done until you've defined your life purpose and clarified your values. These are vitally important and fundamental to living a more happy, successful, and fulfilled life, as I'm certain you will experience by the time 9 months rolls around. I'm excited for you. Where you begin isn't as important at beginning. I hope you give yourself this gift. Decide to do it. Commit to doing it. Schedule it by putting on your calendar NOW. Make it happen. "Jump in! The water's fine." You can click on whatever tier you want on the Fulfillment Pyramid illustration above, too, to bring you to the appropriate page (except for Projects). Of course, you can also click on the in-line links above (throughout the text) or the summarized links below. Go for it! I wish you success and happiness in all that you do. Enjoy the process!
